Masters men podium (Credit: www.teamwedgewood.com)

A fantastic weekend of racing saw a very large contingent of GS riders come out to watch or participate in the Elite, Master, Cat 3, Cat 4 and Pre fondo events. We would like to thank all the riders who helped out by setting up the tents, the feed zone and by offering their very vocal encouragement. Some highlights of the weekend include:

Bob Welbourn winning the Master Men race.

Kristina Banyma finishing second in the Women's Cat 4 race.

Ken Phillips and GS sponsor RCdental.ca finishing second in the don't tell me it's not a race PreFondo.

We unofficially had a mountain bike team last weekend.

I raced the Lake to Lake Classic down in the Niagara Peninsula on Sunday. It's a 50km trek from the shores of Port Colborne to the shores of Port Dalhousie.

53/ 548 overall, 14/166 in the 40-49 age category. It's jamming with the club and doing those skills sessions that helped me get that result.

There's nothing like starting a 125km ride early in the morning with a steep 9% hill 1.5 km hill! The good news is that you can't say you're still not warmed up at the top. The riders were Jim Desroches, Ken Phillips, Bob Landy, Michael Daerendinger, Chuck Tattrie, Alison MacCulloch, Elaine Thorsill, Gord Buntain and myself.

CANCELLED

June 30, 2011 (Vancouver, BC) - The Yaletown Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, July 3 has been abruptly cancelled due to a lack of riders only one day after the organizer sent out an appeal to media requesting support for the race - see organizer's email below. UnitedHealthcare teammates Christian Meier and Andrew Pinfold were slated to appear at this year's event. First held in 2004 as a joint venture by Team Trek Red Truck Racing and MJG Breweries the race grew quickly drawing big crowds to the historic loading docks of the Yaletown district in the heart of Vancouver where the narrow streets and technical course made for exciting racing. SpiderTech's Svein Tuft won last year's race while riding for Garmin-Transitions. It's uncertain if the race will be resurrected.

After just sending out the request 24hrs ago to help promote the Yaletown Grand Prix race I have been made aware that the owner of the even has decided to cancel it. This is not an easy decision and was not made lightly, however the timing could not be worse based on my email last night. But, please know that there has been no discussion around stopping the event until just a few hours ago or I would not have reached out to you in the previous email.

If you have already composed any material I sincerely apologize for this. This is a first for me as I have never had an event cancelled. But, the reasoning is due to lack of riders signed up to participate in the events. I thank all who took the time to help promote the event.

GS riders have also been killing it all over the pacific north west. Here's a recent podium and participation run down:

Enumclaw Stage Race

Race Ambassador Morgan Cabot took 2nd place in the prologue TT in the women's Cat. 3 event. A 1st place finish that evening in the crit put her in the leader's yellow jersey. She successful defended the following day finishing 1st again in the road race and taking the GC by three minutes.

Race Ambassador Megan Grant finished 3rd in the road race and finished 4th in the GC in the women's Cat. 4 event.

Dean Jackson was kind enough to approach one of our riders in a coffee shop a few weeks ago to let them know he has captured some photos of our inaugural group ride of the season. After tracked him down through his website http://www.deanjackson.ca/ he sent us some shots of the entire group just before taking off.

A certified Chi Running instructor Dean would like to pass on that any runners interested in a workshop can contact him for additional details at kapochka7@gmail.com.

This weekend Local Ride will host the first significant race on the BC calendar.  The racing starts Saturday morning at 8am with the individual TT. Tents will be available but riders competing are advised to bring their own trainers and chairs if required.

The sun is out. Let's hope we will not get rained on!

Come on out for the skill sessions. We will be riding at the UBC Tuesday nighter course (West 16th, East Mall and Stadium Road).

We have gotten a lot of feedback from our members regarding the sign-up restriction. The coaches had decided to limit the amount of riders to 30 to guarantee coaching quality.

Even though we have reached this limit of riders for the sessions we will open the first session up to see how big the interest is and will decide after the session how to proceed.
